Introduction to UNCRC

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is a legally-binding international agreement setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities. Viet Nam was the first country in Asia and the second country in the world to ratify the UNCRC in 1990. Over the past three decades, Viet Nam's strong political commitment and leadership on child rights has led to improvements in the lives of millions of children in the country.

However, inadequate public awareness and knowledge levels of children’s rights limits the implementation of the Rights of the Child. “Young Voices in Vietnam” survey conducted by the Institute for Management and Sustainable Development and Save the Children with participation of 1,740 Vietnamese children in 2019 revealed that “One out of two children have never heard about the UNCRC, and as many as one out of nearly seven school children and one out of three out-of-school children have never heard about the concept of child rights”.
