Protect a Generation: The impact of COVID-19 on children's life

Save the Children conducts largest global survey of its kind among 25.000 children and adults on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children.

Latest statistics from Save the Children’s global survey report “Protect a Generation” has revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating impact on many aspects of children’s life. In the last six months since the pandemic was announced, the most vulnerable children have disproportionately missed out on access to education, healthcare, food, and suffered the greatest protection risks. Specifically, over 1.5 billion children have been affected by school closures, with 80% of children saying that they learnt little or nothing at all during the pandemic..

The report also points out that nearly 90% of the households in the world that lost over half of their income due to the pandemic have struggled to access healthcare and medicine,and two-thirds globally have had issues accessing nutritious food.

In Vietnam:

• 72.3% of surveyed households experienced lost income since the pandemic started.
• 63.5% of surveyed households stated that health access for their families had been affected.
• Almost 59% of surveyed parents did not think their children were learning much in comparison to when they were at school.

However, many reported positive experiences when it comes to the parent-children relationship:

• More than 90% of surveyed parents spent time talking to their children about COVID-19.
• 86.2% of surveyed parents practiced positive parenting at home.
• Nearly 65% of surveyed parents said that their families were enjoying the extra time together.

Needless to say, an unexpected crisis like COVID-19 has shown how vulnerable people are and how much work is needed to address and improve resilience. To prevent shocks from future pandemics, governments need to build social safety nets and strong health and nutrition systems, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized households. Resources are needed for positive parenting, protection services for children, and ensuring children’s safety while being on the Internet.

Tổ chức Cứu trợ Trẻ em thực hiện cuộc khảo sát toàn cầu có quy mô lớn nhất về những ảnh hưởng của đại dịch COVID-19 tới trẻ em với sự tham gia của 25,000 trẻ em và phụ huynh.

Kết quả từ cuộc khảo sát toàn cầu “Vì một thế hệ” mới đây của Tổ chức Cứu trợ Trẻ em cho thấy đại dịch COVID-19 đã gây tác động tiêu cực đến nhiều mặt đời sống của trẻ em. Trong 6 tháng kể từ khi đại dịch được công bố, nhóm những trẻ dễ bị tổn thương đã không có điều kiện tiếp cận với giáo dục, chăm sóc sức khỏe, thực phẩm, đồng thời chịu nhiều rủi ro hơn về an toàn cá nhân. Đặc biệt, việc đóng cửa trường học đã làm ảnh hưởng tới hơn 1.5 tỷ trẻ em, trong đó 80% cho rằng các em học được rất ít hoặc không học được gì trong khoảng thời kỳ đại dịch. Báo cáo cũng chỉ ra rằng việc tiếp cận dịch vụ y tế và thuốc men đã trở nên khó khăn hơn cho gần 90% hộ dân trên thế giới có thu nhập bị cắt giảm một nửa vì đại dịch, và hơn 2/3 dân số toàn cầu phải đối mặt với nhiều rào cản trong việc tiếp cận nguồn thực phẩm dinh dưỡng.

Tại Việt Nam:

• 72.3% gia đình tham gia khảo sát cho biết họ bị mất/giảm thu nhập từ khi đại dịch bùng phát
• 63.5% gia đình tham gia khảo sát cho rằng việc tiếp cận dịch vụ y tế của họ bị ảnh hưởng
• Gần 59% cha mẹ cho rằng con mình không học được nhiều khi ở nhà

Bên cạnh đó, các con số cũng cho thấy mối quan hệ giữa cha mẹ & con cái có cải thiện rõ rệt:

• Hơn 90% cha mẹ có nói chuyện với con mình về đại dịch COVID-19
• 86.2% cha mẹ đã áp dụng các biện pháp nuôi dạy con bằng kỷ luật tích cực
• Gần 65% cha mẹ cho biết gia đình họ đã có thêm thời gian bên nhau

Một cuộc khủng hoảng bất ngờ như đại dịch COVID-19 đã cho thấy con người dễ bị tổn thương như thế nào và chúng ta cần nỗ lực nâng cao khả năng chống chịu và thích nghi của mình. Để ngăn chặn những cú sốc tương tự trong tương lai, chính phủ các nước cần xây dựng mạng lưới xã hội an toàn và hệ thống dinh dưỡng, sức khỏe bền vững, đặc biệt cho các nhóm gia đình dễ bị tổn thương & thiệt thòi. Các phương pháp, nguồn lực cho việc nuôi dạy con tích cực, các dịch vụ đảm bảo an toàn cho trẻ trên môi trường mạng cũng cần được đẩy mạnh.
